More and more people these days are taking major steps to ensure long, enjoyable lives by focusing their attention on staying in good shape rather than on treating illnesses once they occur.

Some movements even has advocates in corporate America, where big companies get group insurance benefits for such activities as promoting exercise campaigns and providing exercise rooms for workers.

Here are some steps you can take to promote your own wellness and, in the bargain, prolong and improve the quality of your life:
  • Take pen in hand, think for a while, and then write down the most important reasons you have for living and for staying in good healthy wellness.
  • QuotesInSight.com
Use the light that is in you to recover your natural clearness of sight. (Lao-tse)
Quotes Change Often; You're Welcome Back!

  • With these reasons firmly in mind, enumerate the goals you think will increase your chances of living longer and staying healthy.
  • List real deeds you can perform to reach those goals. If, for example, you need to quit smoking, you might list as an action attendance at a stop-smoking clinic presented by your local chapter of the American Cancer Society.
  • Identify the problems you expect to encounter in achieving each goal and ways you might overcome those problems.
  • Write down the benefits you expect to get from realization of each goal. If, for example, you do quit smoking, you'll not only decrease your chances of lung cancer and heart attack; but also better appreciate the taste of food, save hundreds of dollars a year, and have more energy ..adopt wellness as a life-style
  • Before actually starting your health program, enlist the aid of friends and family members. You need not tell them actual goals, just that you want to exercise, quit smoking, or whatever, and would appreciate help.
  • AS such programs as Alcoholics Anonymous have shown, it's much better to try for self-improvement with help from others.
  • Having set realistic goals, keep track of how you're doing. Keep a journal or a log tracking your performance. In setting your goals, be specific: Do not, for example, plan simply to lose weight, but lose 20 pounds in 10 months to improve wellness

What to do if you think you're having a heart attack
Heart attack is one of this nation's leading killers. Here's what to do if you think you're in trouble---your wellness is in your hands
  • Don't wait for pain to drive you to your doctor's office. At the first symptom, such as skipped heartbeats or a "fluttery" feeling in your chest, contact your physician.
  • If your doctor is unavailable, go to a hospital emergency room.
  • If you're in significant pain, try to rest and have someone else place the telephone call.
  • Remember that while chest pain is the most common symptom, it's not the only one. Don't discount pain in the arm or shoulder and don't discount pain that comes and goes.( wellness tip )
  • Above all, don't ignore symptoms in hopes they'll just go away. Call your physician or the emergency room even if you think the pain is just indigestion or a cramp.
  • Doctors are finally having second thoughts about cholesterol's role in heart disease. The reason has been obvious for years. Cholesterol-lowering drugs have failed to make a dent in heart attack rates. And not one study has been able to show that these drugs do anything to lengthen a person's lifespan. yet, 20 percent of all Americans over 55 currently take a cholesterol drug and most M.D.s believe
more people should be on them. But these doctors are barking up the wrong tree. Here's why...

    Cholesterol is innocent

Cholesterol has been proclaimed innocent since 1992, and plenty of convincing research confirms this. The real culprit is inflammation in the arteries, not cholesterol. Finally, the American Heart association is beginning to agree. they've found that people with heart disease all have one factor in common. It's inflammation in their arteries. This may be big new in the medical community, but this was reported 9 years ago.

But given their bias against any vitamin therapy, doctors probably won't advise this simple approach. Instead, their answer will be antiinflammatory drugs, the next new "miracle cure." Unfortunately, this approach will prove to be as misguided as cholesterol medications were.

    >>wellness tips #98, wellness, wellness, wellness don't smoke

The real solution to heart disease The real solution is to halt the cause of inflammation, one of which is homocysteine, a harmless acid-like waste product that forms when you eat red meat and other protein foods. Homocysteine is quickly broken down by certain B vitamins, so it isn't usually a problem. But if a person isn't getting enough of these B vitamins (a wide spread and disturbing problem in our country today). then homocysteine builds up to dangerous levels and "burns" the delicate tissue of artery walls. Plaque is then formed at the site of this inflammation as the body attempts to heal the damage. How dangerous is this? Studies show that a high level of homocysteine is one of the most dangerous risk factors for heart disease. It increases a person's risk of heart attack by 300 percent!

If you're thinking a little extra B-vitamin intake would correct the problem, you're on the right track. That's exactly how some alternative M.D.s handle the problem. Studies as far back as 1988 show that this B vitamin lowers homocysteine levels back into the safety zone in just weeks. It has an 80% success rate. And the cost is about 5 cents a day.

The secret thyroid connection But if you're a good detective (and I think you are), you're probably wondering what's causing this B-vitamin deficiency in the first place? Closer investigation reveals that an underactive thyroid gland is at the root of the problem. This malfunction inhibits the absorption of B vitamins, causing homocysteine levels to skyrocket. The connection between the thyroid and heart disease was first mentioned in the 1976 book, Solved: The Riddle of Heart Attacks, by Dr. Broda Barnes. His research was largely ignored by the medical community, until the release of a study in 1999. At the Cleveland Clinic, researchers corrected the thyroid function in patients and saw homocysteine levels normalize on their own--without any need for vitamins.

A new heart disease treatment uses a pair of pressurized pants to squeeze blood back to the heart from the legs and buttocks. This causes the body to create new blood vessels feeding the heart (this natural process is called angiogenesis). Referred to as "nature's bypass," the pro-cedure has no side effects

    Power Your Pump Six super foods that can protect your heart's health just as well as a fistful of medication;

Two years ago British scientist proposed the "Polypill," a cocktail of six known drugs that, they claimed, would slash the risk of heart attack and stroke by 80 percent if taken daily.

Now meet the "polymeal," six foods that, eaten regularly, could cut heart disease risk by 76 percent---without drugs. Dutch scientist proposed the diet in fun to show that healthy nutrition can protect your heart as well as drugs can. But they designed the meal by studying scads of research, so it really could add years to your life.

Almonds A handful of almonds a day reduces LDL--bad cholesterol--by nearly 5 percent, according to a University of Toronto study. And two handfuls cut LDL by nearly 10 percent.

Advance wellness, fish Four servings of fish a week can lower heart disease risk by an average of 14 percent, say Tulane University researchers. Choose cold-water species such as salmon, tuna, and sardines---they're full of omega-3s, fatty acids that can lower cholestrol, blood pressure, and even the blood cell stickiness that contributes

to clots. But don't go overboard. More than 4-ounce serving a week can raise levels of mercury in the blood.

Garlic is a wellness plus, it may not do much for your popularity, but a daily dose of garlic can reduce total cholesterol levels by 17 points, for a 25 percent decrease in heart disease risk. Subjects in scientific studies typically take 600 to 900 mg of garlic in dried capsule form, but one fresh clove contains about the same amount of the active compounds.

Produce Score another one for fruits and vegetables. Four hundred grams (about 14 ounces) of produce a day could cut heart disease risk by nearly one fourth. the foods contain antioxidants that fight the cellular damage that contributes to atherosclerosis, a deadly hardening of the arteries. Produce also provides dietary fiber, which was found to cut heart disease risk by 40 percent in a Harvard study. Broccoli, berries, melons, carrots, and leafy greens are all rich in both antioxidants and fiber.

Wine A daily glass of the grape can lower your odds of heart disease by one third, according to the journal Circulation. Wine (especially red) is rich in polyphenols, substances that prevent oxidation, the process that causes cholesterol to glom on to artery walls. As ever, too much wine is worse for you than none at all. The properties to help are found in Noni Juice and can be taken freely

Dark Chocolate Eating this treat daily can reduce blood pressure. University of California, San Francisco, researchers have an idea why: flavonoids, chemical compounds found in chocolate, can decrease blood cell stickiness to promote blood flow. Don't go nuts, though: subjects in the study ate just one 1.6-ounce bar per day.---Malissa Gotthardt

Build a stronger heart with B vitamins

Want to reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke? An extra serving of vegetables or a daily multivitamin may be just the solution you've been searching for. Scientists have found evidence that an increased amount of the amino acid homocysteine in your body could single-handed increase your risk of premature heart disease.

Homocysteine is just one of the 20 amino acids your body use to make protein. Most amino acids, including homocysteine, are obtained and properly managed through a well-balanced diet. Getting too much of the wrong foods or not enough of the right foods can lead to problems with amino acid levels. That's what seem to be the problem with homocysteine.

Scientists have discovered that people who do not get enough vitamin B6 and folic acid in their diets have high levels of homocysteine in their blood. Scientists studies on more than 1,800 volunteers and VA patients have shown that high levels of homocysteine can cause premature hardening of the arteries in people under the age of 55, which can lead to heart disease and stroke.

Boost your B's to hold down homocysteine. The key to keeping your homocysteine levels in the right range and lowering your risk of heart disease seems to be as simple as increasing your intake of vitamin B6 and folic acid. Some rich dietary sources of folic acid include liver, yeast, leafy vegetables, legumes (beans and peas) and some fruits. some natural sources of vitamin B6 include chicken, fish, kidney, liver, pork, eggs, unmilled rice, soybeans, oats, peanuts, and walnuts. Try to stay away from meat sources and eat more vegetables instead.

If you have little control over your dietary intake (lots of travel, live in retirement home, etc.), talk with your doctor about taking vitamin supplements. A daily vitamin supplement can provide you with the recommended daily allowance for folic acid, vitamin B and many other important dietary vitamins.

The Chinese have known about the Goji Berry and its benefits for thousands of years. Not until 2003, when Dr. Earl Mindell finished his work on FreeLife's Himalayan Goji Berry Juice, was this amazing juice finally made available to the rest of the world.

Six operations that are often unnecessary
Surgery is not always the right answer for medical problems - even problems traditionally treated surgically. Always get a second opinion before putting yourself "under the knife." ( wellness tip )
Here are six surgical procedures that are often not necessary
  1. Ruptured disk surgery. Before an operation, make sure that X-ray examination shows the disk is indeed ruptured and that surgery is your best option.
  2. Cosmetic varicose vein removal. Many patients say this cosmetic procedure doesn't give expected results, despite months of discomfort and limited activity. ( wellness tip )
  3. Tonsillectomy.

Used to be almost routine. Now limited to cases where ear infections and strep throats are recurring or breathing difficult. ( wellness tip )

  4. Hysterectomy.

Make sure this operation is needed as some investigations have shown it's frequently performed when less radical treatment would relieve symptoms including heavy bleeding or back pain seemingly caused by a large or displaced uterus.( wellness tip )

  5. Exploratory surgery to discover cause of abdominal pain. Modern diagnostic procedures have made this operation virtually unneeded in most cases. ( wellness tip )

  6. Stone removal. New non-invasive techniques have made it unnecessary, in many cases, to use a scalpel to remove gallstones.( wellness tip )

If you're having trouble sleeping
There are few problems as bothersome as insomnia, the inability to sleep. New research into this relatively common problem has come up with some non-prescription ways to send the sleepless to dreamland.
Here are some suggestions
  • Make sure you're comfortable: your mattress must feel good, wear non restrictive clothing, turn off your telephone if that's necessary and keep the room temperature comfortable, 68 degrees is ideal for most folks.
  • Think of your bedroom as a place to sleep. Mental conditioning is important. If you lie in bed thinking about your inability to sleep, you'll start relating your bed with not sleeping.
  • Set a regular bedtime schedule and stick with it.
  • Exercise early in the day ... late at night it's just too stimulating.
  • Sex, within a comfortable and loving relationship, without tension and stress, can be helpful.
  • DO NOT take over the counter sleeping pills.

Studies have shown them to be placebos (in other words, a sugar coated pill would do as much good-plus they're made in China)

  • If you're suffering from a particular sleep-disturbing emotional or physical disorder, see your doctor immediately.

  • Some individuals report good results with such insomnia cures as relaxation tapes, sleep masks and vibrating beds. If you think these may help you, try them. (You might want to rent a vibrating bed before spending a substantial amount on something that does no more good than counting sheep).

What to ask your surgeon
Always, always, get a second opinion. If surgery is, indeed, indicated, ask the following
  • Exactly what are the risks involved?
  • What is the likelihood of some sort of complication, either on the table or post-operatively?
  • What is the mortality rate for this procedure? What is the rate in this hospital? (These figures are maintained by government mandate.)
  • How long can I expect the recovery process to take?
  • Are there any non-surgical or non-invasive treatments available?
  • Do many of your patients elect not to have this surgery when it's indicated? What happens to them?
  • How many of these procedures have you performed in the last year?
A second opinion joke
"You're insane," a psychiatrist told his patient. I'd like a second opinon, doc. the patient replied. Okay the psychiatrist responded, you're ugly too!

What's that? or How to help someone who's hard of hearing
If you deal with a hearing impaired individual, there are several things you can do to make that person's life (and yours ) much easier.
  • Always speak in full view of a non-hearing or hearing impaired person. Do not chew gum or move your head erratically while speaking.
  • If you're speaking to a person with a hearing aid, move close and speak in a normal voice. If not, raise your voice slightly without bellowing.
  • When in a group of people, try to avoid making the hearing impaired person uncomfortable. Don't cover your mouth while talking and don't whisper. Even if you're not trying to be secretive, the hearing impaired will certainly think you are.
  • Never speak about the hearing impaired, in their presence, as if they can't hear. It's insulting and the individual might understand much more than you think.
  • When speaking to a hearing impaired person, pay attention to facial expressions and maintain eye contact. You'll know if you're being understood.

Buy generic
It's mind-boggling, truly mind-boggling, that many consumers continue to buy brand-name drugs (prescription and over the counter) when they could save big chunks of money by the simple expedient of asking for and buying generic equivalents. These equivalents are EXACTLY the same in chemical composition as their more expensive brand name counterparts, and perform the same services with the same results.

Just an example:

Walgreen's pharmacy (the nationwide chain) sells, under its own brand name, 500 mg acetaminophen gelatin caplets (gelcaps) for less than $3 for a bottle of 50. The exact same (no difference, none at all, the same exact substance) sold under the brand name "Tylenol" brings a price that's almost twice as high.
