To be sure, you won't, in most of these havens, find it possible to run down to the corner to rent a movie video or easy to pull into a fast-food joint for a charburger; you can, however, find a spot where the living is easy while it costs you only about $25 per day
Here's some information about vacation havens in general and specific information on how you might just be able to find "heaven on earth" in Costa Rica
As you search for your own retirement haven, there are several items that should be of primary concern.
Before making any permanent decision to relocate to a haven anywhere in the world, you should take the time to research that location in depth. Most public libraries have ample information about different retirement spots around the world. The best way to research, however, is to take the time and spend the money necessary to travel to any location you find interesting.
Check out - personally - the availability of housing, as well as the availability of local foods and the prices of those foods; talk to other expatriate Americans about what it's like to live off the local economy. Ask questions and demand answers.
If there's any retirement haven that exemplifies the ideal retirement Eden, it has to be the Central American nation (located north of Panama) of Costa Rica. The name in english is "the Rich Coast" - and its nickname is "the Switzerland of America."
Costa Rica is home to more Americans (per capita) than any other country outside of the U.S. and there are many good reasons for this. With a delightful, near perfect tropical climate, low violent-crime rate, stable democratic government and a plethora of outdoor activities to partake in year round, Americans seem to have no trouble adopting Costa Rica as their new home.
Living in Costa Rica among friendly locals, also known as Ticos, allows that “peaceful, easy feeling” to overwhelm you because you NEVER have to worry about a frost and there is always warm sunshine to look forward to, even in the rainy season. Pura Vida!
Bank secrecy laws. Costa Rica has bank-secrecy laws not unlike those of the Cayman Islands.
Literacy. With a literacy rate of more than 90 percent, Costa Rica is one of the most literate nations in the world.
An Eden like climate. In the Meseta Central, where about three-fourths of the country's population resides, temperatures range from about 60 degrees to 77 degrees year-round.
Good - even excellent - medical care that is readily available.
So, you must be asking, just how much does it cost to live in this paradise?
Housing. Rents, vary widely. If you're willing to scale down your expectations a bit, you can find a medium-sized, unfurnished, one-bedroom apartment for about $200 per month. Utilities should amount to about $20 per month. Telephone charges, obviously, would vary with usage.
Food. If you're willing to do without imported goodies, you can eat well on just a few dollars a day.
While there's no single place in the world that's unabashedly perfect, Costa Rica may come as close as any place else on earth - at least for the retiree looking for a "paradise" to enjoy for about $800 per month.
