a fruitful time when you finally have a chance to do the things you put off during your working years - travel, fishing, playing golf, reading - in comfort and security; or, it can be a living hell of scrimping to make ends meet and worrying constantly about financial responsibilities that don't end just because one has punched the time-clock for the last time and about health and the ever-rising cost of health care.

Costa Rica: a retirement paradise on $25 a day!

Hard as it may be to believe, there ar

e places, tropical paradises and lush islands, where you can live comfortably on about $800 per month! Costa Rica is such a paradise.

To be sure, you won't, in most of these havens, find it possible to run down to the corner to rent a movie video or easy to pull into a fast-food joint for a charburger; you can, however, find a spot where the living is easy while it costs you only about $25 per day

Here's some information about vacation havens in general and specific information on how you might just be able to find "heaven on earth" in Costa Rica

  • Any American considering living in a location outside the United States must realize that there are some "trade-offs" necessary if one want to live in style and inexpensively at the same time. The "bottom line" though, is an ability to live in paradise, surrounded by natural beauty, free from the crime that's running rampant in America's major cities, largely free from drug addicts and the ever-present threat of AIDS, surrounded by friendly natives, and all for less than it would cost you to rent even the most inexpensive apartment in most stateside locales.

As you search for your own retirement haven, there are several items that should be of primary concern.

  • Health considerations. It is not an overstatement that "health makes wealth" The best-laid plans in the world can be derailed by an illness in a location where adequate medical care is either unavailable or prohibitively expensive.
  • --- "I Cancelled My Bowel Reconstruction Surgery --- "My last bout of the diverticulitis was no sooner "treated" when it came back with a vengeance the very first time I unknowingly violated your common sense rules of eating. Since ordering your book, I have not had an episode of diverticulitis, needed any medication, lost weight without any hunger and most importantly - canceled my surgery for bowel reconstruction..." • Currency considerations. You must find a location where your money will be safe, not subject to rapid devaluation through inflation and not likely to be lost in a government shake-up. (It's also wise to keep a big chunk of your money in U.S. financial institutions)
  • Travel considerations. Most Americans who retire outside the United States find it necessary to return at some time, or several times, during their retirement. With that in mind, it's important to find a retirement haven that travel intercontinental easy.

Before making any permanent decision to relocate to a haven anywhere in the world, you should take the time to research that location in depth. Most public libraries have ample information about different retirement spots around the world. The best way to research, however, is to take the time and spend the money necessary to travel to any location you find interesting.

Check out - personally - the availability of housing, as well as the availability of local foods and the prices of those foods; talk to other expatriate Americans about what it's like to live off the local economy. Ask questions and demand answers.

Costa Rica -

If there's any retirement haven that exemplifies the ideal retirement Eden, it has to be the Central American nation (located north of Panama) of Costa Rica. The name in english is "the Rich Coast" - and its nickname is "the Switzerland of America."

What does Costa Rica have to offer?

  • A land where racial and religious tensions and discrimination are virtually unknown and, in fact, all forms of discrimination are outlawed.
  • Costa Rica appeals to many for a variety of different reasons. Costa Rica has one of the highest standards of living in Latin America, is the oldest and most stable democratic governments in Latin America and has one of the highest literacy rates in the world (95%). It also has one of the longest life-expectancy rates on earth, 77 years! They must be doing something right in Costa Rica!

Costa Rica is home to more Americans (per capita) than any other country outside of the U.S. and there are many good reasons for this. With a delightful, near perfect tropical climate, low violent-crime rate, stable democratic government and a plethora of outdoor activities to partake in year round, Americans seem to have no trouble adopting Costa Rica as their new home.

Living in Costa Rica among friendly locals, also known as Ticos, allows that “peaceful, easy feeling” to overwhelm you because you NEVER have to worry about a frost and there is always warm sunshine to look forward to, even in the rainy season. Pura Vida!

  • Bank secrecy laws. Costa Rica has bank-secrecy laws not unlike those of the Cayman Islands.

  • Literacy. With a literacy rate of more than 90 percent, Costa Rica is one of the most literate nations in the world.

  • An Eden like climate. In the Meseta Central, where about three-fourths of the country's population resides, temperatures range from about 60 degrees to 77 degrees year-round.

  • Good - even excellent - medical care that is readily available.

  • So, you must be asking, just how much does it cost to live in this paradise?

  • Housing. Rents, vary widely. If you're willing to scale down your expectations a bit, you can find a medium-sized, unfurnished, one-bedroom apartment for about $200 per month. Utilities should amount to about $20 per month. Telephone charges, obviously, would vary with usage.

  • Food. If you're willing to do without imported goodies, you can eat well on just a few dollars a day.

While there's no single place in the world that's unabashedly perfect, Costa Rica may come as close as any place else on earth - at least for the retiree looking for a "paradise" to enjoy for about $800 per month.
