SELLING YOUR PRODUCTS
As with any other kind of manufacturing, success depends upon profitable distribution of your products. There are many methods of distributing and selling, but as a beginner it would be best to start with one method and go slowly....
Giving free samples, in smaller sizes, is an effective and inexpensive way to begin promoting.
Suppose your first product is anti-fog material for eye glasses and mirrors. You would package the samples in small, attractive bottles with clear and complete instructions. Naturally, the more samples you distribute the more interest and demand you will create.

Give samples to friends, relatives, business associates, store owners etc. Samples direct to the consumer can be left at the door, along with a descriptive flyer perhaps, and your name and address as the manufacturer. Remember, we are only using the eye-glass anti fog product as an example; the same technique would apply to nearly any product you will make. To cover larger areas of territory you can contract with firms who specialize in making door to door distribution. You must take care to be sure that all samples are delivered properly, and not discarded by delivery people. A reputable firm will usually do a good job for you.

You may place small ads in local daily or weekly newspapers offering a free sample of your product to people who write you or fill out a coupon. The people who respond to your ads will be excellent prospects for future sales, since they have shown a definite interest. Have an inexpensive flyer prepared to send along with your product--the flyer should contain an order coupon, and of course, your name, address, telephone number etc..

Select a good, reasonably priced printer who can offer suggestions for copy and layout of your flyer. Newspapers usually have a person who is capable of writing good copy and laying out an illustration. You may even start out by testing the sales pull of classified ads. This is an inexpensive form of advertising that often produces excellent results, dollar for dollar. Naturally, no artwork will be needed--just good copy.

DEMONSTRATIONS
Actually demonstrating how your product work is one of the best ways to sell it. Many items would never be sold if it were not for demonstration selling, such as cookware, various kitchen utensils. Demonstrate your product as home shows, flea markets, and before various groups and individuals. The more demonstrations you make, the more you will sell. If you are not by nature the type to make demonstrations, you can find sales oriented people who will do this for you on a commission basis. Place a classified ad under sales help wanted in your local newspaper.
DISPLAYS
Small, well designed window, wall, or counter displays are very effective when properly placed in a store. The copy must be clear and concise--an illustration or two should be used, showing your product in use; point out the benefits; STRESS THE BENEFITS! If your counter display can be placed in the vicinity of the cash register it will be seen by many people--this is probably the best location in a store.
KINDS OF DISPLAYS
The easiest type of counter display would probably be made from corrugated cardboard die-cut. People in the corrugated box business frequently can offer advice and design assistance in this regard. Corrugated box displays can do an effective job for you if they are colorful, compact, and well designed to show your product off to best advantage. The sales message should highlight your products uses and value. A box which combines shipping and display functions in one does the job best. That is, a shipping box so designed that it becomes a display when assembled or snapped into position, and stocks a quantity of your product. It is easily packed and set up in a few seconds. If you sell lower or medium priced items which sell quickly, this may be the ideal type of display for you. Many manufacturers have used such displays to profitable advantage for years. You can to.

To sum up, the basic rules for a good point of purchase corrugated display would be: easy to pack, easy to set up, easy to use, and easily and attractively printed. Start off on the right foot by contacting a company that can offer expert design assistance, from rough sketches thru finished product.

QUANTITY PURCHASERS
A worthy product can be sold in large quantities to drug, department, and chain stores. Remember, packaging is important here. Such stores offer the possibility of very large volume sales. Be prepared to offer them larger discounts than smaller, independent stores. Also, get in touch with some of the larger mail order houses. Their catalogs reach millions of people yearly. If your product appeals to them you may have a winner. You can afford to sell to them for less than usual because you will have no advertising expense.
SALES AGENTS AND SALESMEN
Sales agents are individuals or companies who call regularly on certain types of stores as regular clients. Some agents specialize in calling on hardware stores; others call on automotive service stations and garages; others call only on drug stores, department stores etc.

Such salesmen usually carry several non-conflicting but related lines. For instance, a salesman calling on gift shops may carry a dozen or more related items, or several complete lines of gift items. If your product appeals to the salesman or the company he works for, you may have a ready-made sales force. Check the yellow pages of the local telephone directory under "Manufacturers Reps". You may also consider employing independent salesman to promote your new product. This is especially true at the beginning, when your product is unknown, and sales are harder to make.

JOBBERS AND WHOLESALERS
At the beginning it is best to avoid trying to sell to jobbers and wholesalers. The salesmen they employ are usually just order takers. The store owner simply tells the salesman what he wants to replenish his stock. In other words, the salesman only takes orders where a retail demand already exists. There are, however, exceptions to this general rule. If your product is unique, or different from others, a jobber or wholesaler may be willing to give it a try if they are given a very good wholesale price to make it worth their efforts.
FUND RAISING
If your product sells for a low price, and has wide consumer appeal, it can successfully be sold thru fund raising groups.

Get in touch with local civic organizations, boy scouts, girl scouts, and churches. Most organizations have a committee whose job it is to raise funds. Since fund raising is a very large field, one successful promotion on your part will surely lead to many others. Just work out the details and you will certainly make money at this. No personal selling is involved for you after your initial contact.

Apply with a wet rag, rubbing briskly, wipe with a clean cloth. When rubbed on a damp windshield, acts as an anti-fog agent, making raindrops run right off! For Iodine stains, apply with a damp cloth and rub gently. To use as a rug and upholstery cleaner--dissolve about 1 teaspoon of the paste to a pint or so of water and beat to a froth with an egg beater. Apply with a sponge or brush to "shampoo" fabric.
HOW TO DEMONSTRATE "WONDER-PASTE"
  1. Polish a tarnished silver spoon and note how easily it removes the tarnish. Simply use a wet rag--rub over the paste then apply to the silver. No grit--WONDER PASTE contains a chemical that dissolves the tarnish without harming the silver.
  2. Try it on aluminum and note how quickly and effectively it cleans.
  3. Use it on brass, nickle, copper, and other metals; it quickly removes grime, film, tarnish, and brings up the luster of the metal.
  4. Pour regular mixture of iodine on a cloth--apply a little WONDER PASTE with a wet cloth; rub gently with a circular motion. The iodine is removed completely and quickly.
  5. Clean a piece of glass with WONDER PASTE by wiping it with a damp cloth. Now blow on the glass to show that it will not fog up.
  6. Take a piece of dirty, soiled linoleum or tile and clean a portion. Wipe with a rag. The contrast is striking.
  7. Try it on woodwork and painted surfaces.
  8. Use it on porcelain fixtures.
  9. Applied to a wet windshield-rain drops will run right off. This can be demonstrated by applying to a portion of wet window glass. Then take a sprayer bottle and spray water over the glass. On treated parts of the glass the water will run right off, while on the untreated portion the drops of water form a mist.
  10. Try it on rugs and upholstery (be sure to follow directions on the can when using for this purpose). Cleans and brightens!
  11. Note that there is nothing gritty about this cleaner.
  12. Cleans clothing and other fabrics that water will not harm.
  13. Many other demonstration angles will suggest themselves after you have tried this fine product.
